At MetroEHS Pediatric Therapy, our ABA staff are highly trained and certified by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Our ABA technicians work directly with your child, one-on-one. ABA technicians undergo a 40 hour training and sit for an exam to become a Registered Behavior Technicians (RBT). Each RBT receives continuous training and supervision by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). BCBA’s complete assessments, develop treatment programs, provide supervision, hold parent training, attend IEP’s, and make data based decisions.
When inquiring about ABA services, a thorough assessment is completed to assess your child’s strengths and weaknesses in order for the BCBA to develop an individualized treatment program to strengthen those weaknesses.
Some areas that are assessed include: Expressive language, receptive language social and communication skills, fine motor skills, gross motor skills, self-help skills, play skills, safety, emotional regulation, stereotypical or repetitive behaviors, and much more.
We involve the parents/caregivers throughout the treatment process to ensure that the skills learned in therapy can be reinforced at home. Parents are required to attend at least a .5hr of parent training per week. This increases the likelihood of the behavior generalizing across people and environments as well as to ensure that the skills are maintained across time.
What is ABA Therapy?
Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA), is an evidence based treatment that focuses on improving socially significant behaviors, and has shown to be an effective treatment for children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Everyone engages in behaviors (i.e., walking is a behavior), but some children with autism may engage in atypical behaviors, such as: aggression, property destruction, self-injurious behavior, or repetitive/stereotypical behaviors (e.g., hand flapping, lining cars up, repetitive non-contextual vocalizations), just to name a few. ABA will identify the function of behavior (attention, tangible, attention, escape) in order to teach the child a socially appropriate replacement behavior. ABA also aids to improve expressive language, receptive language, motor skills, play skills, social skills, and self-help skills.
The goal of Applied Behavioral Analysis is to increase functional behaviors that can better a child’s life and decrease behaviors that negatively impact a child’s life and may be harmful. Individualized behavior interventions are developed by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and implemented by their one-on-one direct care therapist (RBT).
What is a BCBA?
A BCBA is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. They conduct the initial assessment, develop the intervention plan, monitor implementation of the plan, report to insurance companies, and hold parent training sessions. BCBA’s review and analyze data collected during your child’s therapy session in order to make data based decisions on client progress and modify treatment programs if needed.
